200 Good conversation starters to talk to anyone in any situation

By: Naveen B

Good conversation starters are important for any social situation.

The most enjoyable moments usually end with two or more people conversing about what they’re interested in.

When you know where to start, it becomes much easier to maintain a conversation with anyone. And finding a topic to talk about isn’t so hard after all.

You can make a new friend, or get to know someone better simply by asking them a question about themselves.

Not only will it help you to know them better, but it will also give them the opportunity to feel more interesting and appreciated. Remember to pay attention to their responses so you can ask follow-up questions.

If you want to find out how you can start a conversation with anyone, read this guide on: how to start a conversation with some good conversation starters

What are good conversation starters?

Good conversation starters or openers are icebreakers used to initiate a conversation. These are often said in passing, at the beginning of a conversation, but can also be used to initiate a specific discussion or activity.

So, what are some good conversation starter questions?

Here are some good opening conversation starters

1. Do you know what time it is? This opener works well with men and women alike. I have actually used it several times since it is an easy way to get someone to talk to me if they happen to be wearing a watch or have a phone out.

In fact, I often ask right after telling someone the time (even if they didn’t ask). That way the transition feels smoother because there was already an interaction between us that involved talking.

2. How did you get into _____? Everyone has a story, and most people love to tell it (especially if they have an interesting or unusual job).

The best way to find out what that story is, is to ask directly and then listen intently as they walk you through it.

3. What do you think of this event/place? If you are somewhere interesting, ask them what they think of it and why they came to check it out, or what they think of the event so far (if it’s early enough in the event).

4. Do you know any good restaurants around here? This can work as a context cue if you are in a restaurant or bar.

But also works well as a conversation opener if you are traveling somewhere new and want to find someplace to eat with locals (or locals who know the area well).

5. Why did you choose this place/event? It’s always interesting to find out why people chose something and get to know more insights about the place and the person’s taste as well.

If you both have a common interest that would help you build connections and friendships.

6. Did you hear about ____? This one is pretty easy and straightforward, but it still often works well for me because I always hear about some new thing going on in the world every day and I like to share that knowledge with others as an icebreaker.

7. What do you think of ____? This one also makes use of context cues, except it’s not so much what people are holding or doing as it is what they are looking at or listening to when you approach them

8. Where did you get that ______? I’ve been looking for one for months.

This is perfect for shoes, jewelry, or anything else with a story behind it that will encourage them to share details about themselves and why they purchased it in the first place.

9. What do you do for fun in your spare time? Asking about people’s hobbies will help you come up with lots of ideas for date ideas later on.

10. Tell me about your tattoo/facial piercing/nose ring/etc.? People love talking about things that are meaningful to them and tattoos are often a great way to start a conversation.

Because they give people the opportunity to explain their tattoos and where they got each one done and why they chose to get them on specific parts of their body etc.

11. Isn’t it really fun? A really easy-to-initiate conversation opener is to look for someone who is by themselves but looks like they are having an okay time.

It’s easy to sit next to someone at a table, or stand next to someone at the bar and simply ask, “Having a good time?” or “Enjoying yourself?” It’s a nicer opener than just “How are you?”

12. I know you! You might have seen someone around before and not had the courage to approach them. They might have seen you too! So, if you see them again somewhere else, just go up and say something like

You look familiar, do we know each other? Where have I seen you before?” It could be that they work down the street from where you live; maybe they are friends with your brother; maybe they had the locker next to yours when you were in high school – it

13. How do you know [name of person you have in common]? If you already have something in common, talking about that can be the perfect conversation starter.

14. What brings you here? This is particularly useful if you are out and about and spot someone who doesn’t seem to be from your local area (e.g., an airport, conference).

15. Good to see you again! If there are people at the event that you already know, it can be good practice for social situations later on if you introduce yourself to them.

16. Where did you get (blank)? If you see someone wearing something interesting, this is a great way to strike up a conversation with them. For example, if they are wearing unique shoes, some cool jewelry, or even a fun t-shirt – simply ask them where they got it!

17. Hey! How are you? This works well because most people say “I’m fine, thanks” (or some variation thereof), which opens up the door for you to ask another question without it feeling too awkward or intrusive.

18. Who do you know here? This is one of my favorites because it opens the door for a conversation with someone even if they don’t know anyone at the event or party that they’re attending. You could follow up with “Do you know anybody here?

19. How’s that drink?

20. Who do you know here?
